The denomination "Ionic Pottery" indicates the objects produced by the Greek populations that lived in the central part of today's Turkey and in the Aegean islands. Among the types of Greek-oriental production, widespread in the Archaic period (VII-VI century BC), there was the so-called Ionic cup, imported all over the Mediterranean and imitated by local productions.
The very simple decoration, which alternates between painted areas and "spared" bands on which thin lines are painted, the ideal form for drinking, explains the great fortune of this type of cup, object of prestige among the indigenous peoples who were influenced by the Greek culture."
